I enjoy a good teenage story and I enjoy reading Ron Koertge’s books (Margaux with an X, Stoner & Spaz) but they don’t shine, much like I think Chris Crutcher’s stories don’t shine. It’s just too much drama for one tiny book, don’t you think? Take Boy Girl Boy, which is the Koertge’s book that I just finished, among the many issues that Larry, Teresa, and Elliott face are anorexia, homosexuality, boy-girl relationships with frustrating consequences, bad parenting, bullies, jocks without smarts, brainiacs, etc. Too much? Or, no?
